We live in a consumeristic society. If you asked me what was the biggest problem the church in America faces, it is that we consume church instead of join it – we go to be entertained instead of to be improved. And many churches, needing funds, decide to supply something to be consumed instead of do what church is supposed to do. But we are also being consumed.. . .
Our world is full of fables about being convinced of untruths. The Emperor Has New Clothes tells us about how easily we can fall prey to con men and how easily groupthink can aid that process. Chicken Little tells us about how easily we can be fooled into thinking we are doing a good thing only to end up as a meal. The Boy Who Cried Wolf teaches us that uttering falsehoods too often can mean we are not heard even when we speak truth. So many classic and ancient lessons that we seem never to learn.. . .
It wasn’t a bad idea – “Let’s spruce up the reflecting pool on the mall before the 250th celebration.” The reply quickly came, “Mr. President, there is not enough time to let the contract under federal procurement regulations.” The president responded, “Figure out a way not to follow them and get the job done.” And here we are, many weeks later, and at the moment that conversation – or something close to it – has become the biggest scandal in Washington D.C. You would think the man ordered tactical nukes distributed to every household in the nation given the level of furor that has ensued. Give me a break!. . .
Ready or not, the future calls. Science fiction and multiversal stories notwithstanding, time marches on, ever forward. The future is inevitable. Do we shape the future or are we shaped by it? As I have perused the news this last few days I have seen many pieces looking upon the future, generally with pessimism. Such thinking presumes we shape the future – that what we do today shapes what happens tomorrow. But is that really the case?. . .
British Labour PM Keir Starmer is stepping down after just two years. Britain is in a shambles, but I have not followed the mess closely enough to get into the details. What’s interesting is his resignation speech. He is attempting to set a narrative for his service. He is, by any objective measure a failure in the job, but he is doing his best to make it look otherwise. The spin he is putting on current events may win the day for a moment, but history can be a cruel task master.. . .
Los Angeles has proven completely incapable of extinguishing a warehouse fire in four days. I could carry on for hours about this, but I just want to focus on what an utter failure it represents. There are a few fundamental things that a municipality has to get done and get done right. One of those is fire prevention and fire fighting. Between the devastating wildfires of January ’25 and now this, it would seem Los Angeles cannot get that one fundamental job done. They may be able to make mayoral votes appear out of thin air, but dealing with a fire seems impossible. Anyplace else and this would be a political disaster, but in L.A. its just a hiccup. The real problems lie deeper.. . .
