Authorities are searching for additional people who fired weapons during a weekend shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded. The shooting happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday near campus dormitories as students were preparing for the start of the new school year. Police arrested 19-year-old Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia, after finding him hiding in a dormitory closet later Saturday. Harris, who is not a VSU student, faces four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. Investigators say multiple people fired weapons during the incident and are working to determine whether those individuals were aggressors or were acting in self-defense. The five victims range in age from 17 to 23. Only one of them is a Virginia State University student. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.

At least 68 people are dead following a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck eastern Indonesia over the weekend. President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce annual joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the cost of the drills, Seoul’s refusal to assist U.S. efforts against Iran and his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump announced the decision Sunday as the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises were set to begin. The drills started Monday as scheduled and involve about 18,000 South Korean troops. It remains unclear which portions of the exercises will be scaled back. Trump said the exercises send an unnecessarily hostile signal to North Korea, which has long criticized the joint drills as rehearsals for an invasion. North Korea recently launched ballistic missiles ahead of the exercises and warned of a stronger response if the drills went forward. The president also said he recently asked South Korean President Lee Jae Myung whether Seoul would join U.S. efforts aimed at the “denuclearization” of Iran and that South Korea declined. South Korea responded Monday by expressing hope that Trump’s relationship with Kim could help restart dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang and reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The annual exercises are intended to strengthen the allies’ readiness against potential threats from North Korea. Trump has previously questioned the cost and scale of U.S.-South Korean military exercises while pursuing diplomacy with Kim.
