Southwest Airlines Seating Change for 2025

If you consider yourself a “Southwest person”, then this news is, of course, HUGE.

In 2025, Southwest Airlines is rolling out a significant update to its seating policy, a move that's set to shake up the airline industry. Known for its open seating model—where passengers choose their seats upon boarding—Southwest is introducing a new, more structured approach. The upcoming policy introduces a tiered boarding system that will allow passengers to select seats in advance for an additional fee, marking a shift from the airline’s long-standing, egalitarian boarding process.

Under the new system, passengers will have the option to pay for reserved seating when booking their tickets, giving them priority over those who choose to stick with the traditional open seating model. The reserved seating will be categorized into different pricing tiers based on seat location, with options such as extra legroom, window, or aisle seats available at varying costs. This change aims to cater to passengers seeking more control over their travel experience while still maintaining Southwest’s beloved first-come, first-served boarding process for those who prefer it.

To me, this is a no brainer move. Southwest has always considered itself a low cost carrier yet operates like a legacy carrier because it has survived deregulation and the current day traveler needs. However, Southwest previous (or current) seating scheme was a key differentiator for the other airlines of similar size such as American, Delta and United.

Southwest’s new policy is a response to growing competition and changing customer preferences, as more travelers express a desire for seat selection at the time of booking. However, the airline remains committed to keeping its unique, customer-friendly atmosphere, ensuring that all passengers, regardless of seat selection, enjoy the same level of service and hospitality.

Will we see Southwest move towards being more competitive with its fleet size counterparts? Perhaps business or first class seating, checked luggage fees, airport lounges…only time will tell.

As the 2025 launch date approaches, frequent Southwest flyers should keep an eye out for further details on how this policy will be implemented and how it might affect their travel plans. This change marks a new chapter in Southwest Airlines' history, blending tradition with innovation to meet the evolving needs of its passengers.

Happy Travels!
