Narcissists That Think They Are Helping

We live in an increasingly narcissistic age. Since the Christian ideal of selflessness is no longer viewed as a public virtue, we all have that friend.  You know, the one that says they are there to help, but are really there to be the star of the show – to order your world to their liking because they honestly and deeply believe that if you would only listen your world really would be better.  They are not evil, just deeply misguided and unwilling to engage in anything resembling self-examination.  But at some point their self-absorption becomes evil, even given their lack of evil intent.  Conflict becomes inevitable and while you don’t want to hurt them, in many cases you eventually have to cut them out of your life because they are beginning to produce actual damage.  I wonder if, as a nation, we have reached that point with the Left?

Consider some examples.

Not satisfied with forcing teams with Native American mascots to change, they are now going after teams that use live animals for the same purpose.   In this case they are creating a problem in order to solve it.  The Butler University mascot, an English Bulldog, may be the most beloved creature on the planet.  Observed by hundreds, often thousands, daily, that dog is given expert care at the slightest provocation.  But then, PETA just made headlines, so one must wonder if such was not the real purpose of the move anyway – even if PETA thinks it is looking after the dog’s welfare.

Remember Saturday when we looked briefly at a story about trying to make maps more “gay.”  Turns out the matter is far more insidious.  It’s all about some “queer” notion of equitability that would in all likelihood render maps fairly useless.  Athletic team mascots is a relatively silly matter – this is not.  This is real world effects, making matter worse, not better.  And yet the people engaged in the effort thought they were doing a good thing – or were they just doing something that made themselves feel good?

But when it comes to trying to level the playing field, matters get worse.  The idea of “reparations,” you know, paying compensatory damages to people that suffered no harm, won’t die in California.  This idea makes the money thrown into “queering” the maps look trivial.  Same fundamental idea, same perception of good intentions, but far more damage in dollars, and the disincentive to productivity it creates.

But when it comes to wasting money…Trillions of dollars have been wasted on “climate change” – trillions.  And every one of those dollars could have gone somewhere that would have produced concrete results in the here and now.  Oh sure, climate activists think they are doing something good, but they’re not, they are simply spending money in inconceivable amounts.  And all to solve a problem that is, at best, ephemeral.  We know that human activity affects the climate, but we do not even know if that is a good or a bad thing, how much it is the case, or if we can change it provided we should.

But then we get to the point where we do not exaggerate or overcompensate, but we begin to actually warp reality.  You know that school in Iran that we supposedly fired a missile on?  Wasn’t the case – not even close to the case.  And journalists had to work overtime to make it look like we had.  we have advanced from misperception to lying.  The war is going fine, but the legacy media has to make sure it does not appear that way.  They feel slighted by this administration, and after all, it’s all about them.

We can no longer afford the narcissists among us that think they are helping.  We don’t need their help – we need them to leave us alone.
